In a large empty studio with high cathedral windows we set down our bags and let our eyes adjust to the light. This space was formerly a church (and still has Sunday service on occasion), and holds onto the silent, mystic air that comes standard in holy places. The dust swirled in the beams of light filtering through the textured glass windows. We plugged in the music. A crackle of life came into the speakers, and music gently filled the space, swallowing up the silence in every corner of the roof and crack of the floorboards. What a place to dance. Without choreography, without instruction, and without hesitation, Haley took her place on the floor and began to dance.
“Dance, when you’re broken open. Dance, if you’ve torn the bandage off. Dance in the middle of the fighting. Dance in your blood. Dance when you’re perfectly free.”
This quote perfectly embodies the feeling I get when watching a powerful piece of dance. A good dancer is able to embody an inexpressible feeling, to send emotion shooting into the room like lightning bolts, to become gaseous and fill a space with their presence. I’m proud to say that amongst my group of friends I harbour a few incredible dancers. Haley is one of these, currently training and working with Arts Umbrella Dance Company in Vancouver. In a rare stroke of luck, we were joined by Jayson, another dancer working ‘under the Arts Umbrella.’
Every time I meet someone who is passionate about their craft it fuels my creative fire. I believe that if you surround yourself with driven and enthusiastic people you can’t help but catch some of that from them. I’m super stoked to be meeting and working with so many talented and excited people this summer, but I still have room for more! If you – yes, you reading this – identify with what I’m talking about, drop me a line! Let’s be friends, let’s collaborate, let’s create!
