When the Rowbotham family asked me if I’d be willing to make the trip over to Vancouver Island to shoot their family portraits in Tofino, there was no chance I was turning them down. Tofino is a surfers’ paradise tucked away on the west coast of the island with long sandy beaches surrounded by thick temperate rainforests. I had been hoping to visit Tofino once more before leaving Canada for London, so this opportunity struck at the perfect time.
The Rowbothams met me in Nanaimo, and we made our way to Tofino together along the beautiful winding roads beside Cameron Lake and through Cathedral Grove. Our soundtrack to the trip was The Dirty Heads (thanks for introducing me to some new summer jams!). We went straight to Wickaninnish Beach – a long stretch of gorgeous sand bordered by windswept trees and sand dunes. The Rowbothams have been coming to this beach for years, so it was the perfect place to document their family.
You never know when you schedule a photo shoot weeks ahead in the PNW what the weather will be like when the time comes – forecasts are notoriously inaccurate and constantly changing. Despite the threat of some rain we lucked out and had beautiful sunshine and some light cloud cover for the whole day! This family is so full of joy that I’m sure no matter the weather they would have toughed it out and had an amazing time regardless, but the calm blue sky and light sea mist made for a gorgeous backdrop.
After a day full of laughter, chasing dogs, and Tacofino (if you haven’t experienced this food truck-turned-food-sensation, you are seriously missing out) we watched the sun fade on the mountaintops as we drove back to Nanaimo. Any shoot that leaves me with sand between my toes and a smile on my face is alright by me, so thank you so much to the Rowbothams for singing in the car, running on the beach, and making the day an absolute pleasure. Because of you, I have a very fond memory of the west coast to tide me over until my next visit.
